EPND+ is an independent, non-profit European organisation providing researchers with the data infrastructure, tools, and partnerships needed to advance research across neurodegenerative and related diseases.
Delivering the infrastructure to accelerate discovery
Data and biosample infrastructure are some of the greatest challenges in health research — requiring sustained investment in compute, governance, and regulatory compliance that few research teams can maintain independently.
EPND+ works to solve these problems, providing:
- A single access point to diverse neurodegenerative disease datasets, including digital measures and biosample collections – a combination which provides critical data analysis and insights opportunities;
- Validated tools and workflows that support collaborative research;
- A white-label, turnkey tool supporting transdiagnostic research projects and consortia;
- Flexible infrastructure that supports centralised, distributed, and federated data access, enabling researchers to work across diverse data environments.

EPND+ provides researchers and institutions with robust, purpose-built infrastructure for neurodegenerative disease research and related fields.
Flexible data infrastructure
EPND+ provides a single access point to discover, access, share, and analyse datasets and biosamples from more than 80 neurodegeneration research studies across Europe. Its flexible model works with a variety of data systems, and allows data and samples to remain securely within their home institutions while making them discoverable and accessible to the broader research community — enabling access to valuable collections that could not otherwise be centralised.
Turnkey platform access
Researchers gain access to a suite of validated tools, embedded workflows, and secure cloud-based workspaces built for interoperability through our white-label offering — without the need to build or maintain complex infrastructure independently. The platform supports standard and novel analyses, with AI-enabled methods coming soon, and centralises publications and findings from prior Innovative Health Initiative (IHI)-funded initiatives to give researchers a stronger starting point for new work.
ELSI governance and data stewardship
EPND+ applies established ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) frameworks, FAIR data principles, and GDPR-compliant data stewardship practices across all platform activity, meeting the regulatory compliance demands of multi-country, multi-institution research. Researchers gain access to that infrastructure without having to develop or resource it themselves.
Preliminary services
EPND+ offers a growing suite of services to support researchers, consortia, and institutions such as cloud infrastructure support related to analytics environments, white-label deployment of the EPND Hub for external initiatives and disease communities, and ongoing technical support and help desk services. Additional services are in development.
The EPND Hub
The EPND Hub is the platform's central access point for discovering, accessing, and analysing neurodegenerative disease datasets and biosamples — designed by researchers, for researchers. It is interoperable with the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative’s AD Workbench, which means that registered users can use a single set of login credentials to view and request available datasets across both platforms, and perform analyses within their own secure, cloud-based workspaces.

From consortium initiative to independent infrastructure.
EPND+ is the evolution of the European Platform for Neurodegenerative Diseases (EPND), originally developed as a part of late-stage Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 (IMI2) and early funding from the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI). EPND was built by a multidisciplinary consortium of 29 public and private partners from across Europe, bringing together expertise from biopharma, medtech, academic research institutions, and patient advocacy organisations.
Purpose-built to solve the data infrastructure challenges that fragment neurodegenerative disease research across Europe, EPND has supported multiple IHI-funded initiatives across its lifespan including:
- Serving as a single destination for search and accessing data from foundational projects including EPAD, AMYPAD, and PRISM;
- Actively supporting AD RIDDLE and ACCESS-AD, and;
- As EPND+, recently included as a potential public partner in a newly funded transdiagnostic initiative connecting neurodegeneration, depression, and obesity.
EPND+ marks the next chapter for the platform — an independent, EU-based entity ensuring the infrastructure built through IHI continues to support the research community beyond any single funding cycle.
